How to Cook Steamed Artichokes
Steamed artichokes make for a delicious and healthy appetizer or side dish. Here are a few simple steps to help you cook perfectly tender and flavorful artichokes.
- 4 fresh artichokes
- 2-3 cloves of garlic
- 1 lemon, sliced
- Salt and pepper to taste
Step 1: Start by preparing the artichokes. Remove any tough outer leaves and trim the stem, leaving about 1 inch attached to the base. Cut off the top quarter of the artichokes and rub the cut edges with lemon to prevent browning.
Step 2: Fill a large pot with water, add a pinch of salt, and bring it to a boil. Place the artichokes, garlic cloves, and lemon slices in a steamer basket and lower it into the pot. Make sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the basket.
Step 3: Cover the pot and steam the artichokes over medium heat for about 30-40 minutes, or until the leaves can be easily pulled off and the base is tender when pierced with a fork.
Step 4: Once cooked, transfer the artichokes to a serving plate and let them cool for a few minutes. Serve them whole or quartered, depending on your preference.
Steamed artichokes go well with a variety of dipping sauces, such as a lemon herb aioli or melted butter with a hint of garlic. Enjoy these tasty and nutritious vegetables as a delightful addition to any meal!
